| Author(s): The CareerZone Team |
| Grades: 6 - 8 |
| Subject: Career Development and Occupational Studies |
|
|
| Learning Context:
Students will: 1. Research the occupations of people who "make the news" before going on a field trip to a news station (using CareerZone). (ELA 1), (CDOS 1) 2. Gain knowledge about the careers of people who work at a news station. (CDOS 1), (MST 6) 3. Complete a KWL chart about the field trip to the news station and the people that work there. (ELA 1), (CDOS 1), (MST 1) 4. Create 3 interview questions to ask the people that work at the news station using information from CareerZone. (ELA 1, 4), (CDOS 1), (MST 1) |
| Procedure:
1. The teacher will explain to the class that they will be going on field trip a local news station to see how the news is made and to learn about the careers of the people that work there. 2. To assess prior knowledge, the teacher will make a KWL chart on chart paper, poster board, etc. 3. The teacher will ask the students what they already know about the news, the station, and the people that work there. The teacher will write the answers under the "K" section on the chart. 4. Once the "K" section of the chart is filled and the class is finished discussing what they know, the teacher will ask the students what they want to know about the news, the station, and the people that work there. The teacher will write the answers under the section labeled "W." 5. Next, the teacher will have the students research several news related careers that they will learn about and see on the field trip. (Broadcast News Analyst, Camera Operator (Television), Program Director, Meteorological Technician and Technologists) The teacher will have the students work in small cooperative learning groups. Each group will be assigned one of the news-related careers and be asked to research the careers at www.nycareerzone.org. 6. The teacher will tell the class they need to write down 3 questions to ask the person on the field trip using the information from CareerZone (3 questions per group). 7. After the field trip, the students will complete the KWL chart. The teacher will ask the students what they learned on the field trip to the news station. Their answers will go under the section labeled "L." 8. To close the lesson, the students will vote on their favorite news-related career that they learned about and saw on the trip. During math, the class could make a graph with their votes and discuss the results. |
