|
|
| Learning Context:
Students will: 1. Demonstrate their listening and speaking skills by participating in class discussion. (ELA 1, 2) 2. Work cooperatively in a small group (ELA 4) 3. Research careers of historical/famous figures and careers of today by using the Internet (and CareerZone), books, and other sources of information. (ELA 1), (MST 2), (SS 1, 2), (CDOS 1) 4. Exhibit their note taking skills (ELA 1) 5. Use technologies to create a presentation. (MST 2) 6. Demonstrate their speaking skills by presenting their information to the class. (ELA 1, 4) |
| Procedure:
1. The teacher will open the lesson by explaining to the class that many occupations have changed over the years. He/she will also discuss how many have also stayed the same. The teacher will also mention that there are many factors that led to changes in certain jobs and there are also reasons why many jobs stayed the same. The teacher will tell the class that they are going to learn about careers, by researching the careers of famous and historical figures. 2. The teacher will assign each student with a partner to work with on the research project. 3. The teacher will have a list of famous and historical figures on the board. 4. The teacher will assign a figure to each group. 5. Next the teacher will explain the directions for the project: 6. Each group will research their historical figure using the Internet, books, etc. 7. They should concentrate on their hobbies, talents, education, accomplishments, and careers. The students must take notes on these important facts and record the sources they used. 8. Next, the students need to research the specific career of their historical figure. If the figure has more than one career, they must choose the one they find most interesting. Since the students will be researching the career in today's society, they will need to compare and contrast. For example, if their figure was an astronomer, they will compare and contrast the qualifications, duties, education, etc. of astronomers yesterday and today. The students will research the careers at www.nycareerzone.org. Students must take notes. 9. Directions for researching at www.nycareerzone.org: (Choose the cluster that the career falls under or complete a search. Click on the career when you find it on the list. Read and take notes.) 10. Once the students gather their information, they will be asked to present their findings. The presentation will focus on the career, as it was years ago and the career in today's society. The similarities and differences need to be pointed out. This is a chance for the students to be creative. Some suggestions are: make a PowerPoint presentation, use pictures, use a Venn Diagram, etc. |
| Instructional/Environmental Modifications:
|
| Materials and Supplies:
1. Computers 2. Pens/pencils 3. Books from classroom, library, etc. about historical figures |
| Time Required:
This lesson may take several days because of the research and presentation that needs to be done. A forty-five minute class period each day may be fine (for about 2 or 3 days). The presentation portion can be worked on in class and/or outside of school. Time also depends on the number of students and small groups. |
| Assessment Tools and Techniques:
A presentation and/or group rubric can be used to evaluate students. Make your own rubric at www.teach-nology.com/cgi-bin/presentation.cgi |
| Reflections:
The teacher can choose his/her own historical figures for the students to research. The number varies according to the number of groups. Some examples are: Rachel Carson (Marine Biologist), Dorothy Dandridge (actress, singer, dancer), Nicolaus Copernicus (astronomer), William Blake (English Romantic Poet), etc. |
