| Learning Context:
Students will: 1. Gain an understanding of the different jobs that are needed to successfully run a school. (ELA 1), (CDOS 1) 2. Research the duties and qualifications of workers in their school by researching the jobs on the computer (www.nycareerzone.org) (ELA 1), (MST 5) 3. Present and discuss their findings with the whole class. (ELA 1, 3, 4), (CDOS 1, 2) |
| Procedure:
1. As a large group, the teacher will begin the lesson by asking the students to brainstorm all of the different occupations that are needed to run a school successfully. 2. The teacher will record the student responses on the board. (The students should include cafeteria workers, secretarial staff, postal workers, maintenance staff, nursing personnel, teacher aides, as well as the teachers and students. The teacher can also quide them to these occupations.) 3. The teacher will discuss with the class that each of these jobs have specific duties and qualifications. 4. Next, the teacher will guide the students through the CareerZone website to research the qualifications and duties of the school occupations listed on the board. (First, choose the correct cluster. Then, choose the correct occupation and read about the job descriptions, interests, knowledge, interests, etc.) 5. The teacher will have the students work with a partner and designate a school worker for them to interview. The small groups will create 3 simple interview questions, using information from CareerZone, and they will write them on paper. (Some examples are: What did you have to do to get this job? What classes did you take in school that helped you with this job?) The students should request that the questionnaire be filled out in a day or two. 6. The students will collect their questionnaires from the workers . 7. Lastly, the students will share and present their results with the class. The teacher can also follow with a class discussion that will help the students see the commonalities among the jobs and the qualifications of each worker. |
