Research career interests by searching through the career exploration system - CareerZone. (ELA 1), (CDOS 1), (MST 2) 3. Work in cooperative learning groups. (ELA 4) 4. (ELA 1, 4), (CDOS 1)

Procedure:
1. The teacher will introduce the lesson by discussing with the class how learning certain skills in middle school will help them create greater opportunities to access the career of their dreams. The teacher will also discuss how it is never too soon to begin dreaming and considering possible career choices. He/she will also talk about how this lesson will let them sample several career choices. 2. Next, the teacher will have the students go to www.nycareerzone.org to "target their interests." The students will click on "Access Yourself" to get to the target wheel. Then, the students will choose the 3 interest areas that appeal to them the most. 3. The teacher will now have the class break into cooperative learning groups (3 per group) according to their interest areas. Each person in the group needs to have a job (interviewer, secretary, and computer person). 4. The teacher will have a list of professions on the board. The groups will choose a profession that is related to their career interests. (Lawyer, Flight Instructor, Teacher, Veterinarian, Computer Programmer, Detective, Floral Designer, Registered Nurse, and Postal Worker) 5. Next, using www.nycareerzone.org, students will locate information based on the career interest in which they have chosen. The secretary will take notes on important information. The students will pick the cluster for the field in which their career falls. Once they find the career, they can research the job description, knowledge, skills, etc. 6. After researching their career and taking notes, the groups will create a job description and help wanted ad for the career. The students should use CareerZone and newspapers to guide them with the job description and help wanted ad. 7. The students will now prepare to interview someone engaged in their career. The teacher will tell the students to brainstorm 10-15 questions that they will use in their interview. 8. The students can use the phonebook, family, neighbors, and friends to locate a professional willing to be interviewed about their job. If a group is having difficulty, they should contact the teacher for help finding a person to interview. (If possible, the students can take pictures at the professional's workplace.) 9. After the interview, the groups will design a PowerPoint presentation on their chosen career. They will use the information from CareerZone, interviews, and pictures to create the presentation. 10. Lastly, the groups will present their PowerPoint presentations to the class.

Instructional/Environmental Modifications:
The teacher can choose different careers rather than the ones listed in the lesson plan. CareerZone provides information on 900 different jobs. There are also career videos of 200 jobs illustrating real people at work.
