| Non-Traditional Careers |
| Author(s): Kathryn Tortorella and Gail Arnold |
| Grades: 6 - 8 |
| Subject: Social Studies |
|
|
| Learning Context:
1. Students will read the article: "Gender and Work in America: An Historical Perspective." Students will study the career information presented in CareerZone and O*Net to identify areas where non-traditional workers are represented and/or where gender neutral language is used. Women have had a varied history in the workplace. They have, at times, had equal opportunities with their male counterparts and at other times been oppressed. Currently, we have a "glass ceiling" for women in management areas and women still make nearly 1/4 less than men for identical jobs. Women also find discrimination relative to child care/maternity responsibilities. Conversely, men find there are stigmas attached to their career choices as well. We have very few male nurses or child care workers, but we desperately need them. It is critical that current educational software present the workplace as an equal opportunity employer. 2. After collecting data, students will share in small cooperative groups during classroom time. Using CareerZone and O Net enables students to read, understand, evaluate, and critically analyze information (ELA #1, 3). Using the CareerZone and O Net will enable students to explore career options (CDOS #1). Students will access information using CareerZone and O Net then generate, process, and transfer information using technology (MST #2). |

| Reflections:
CareerZone has many positive examples of Gender Neutrality and Non - Traditional career opportunities. This is valuable for students in assessing their own career choices. Students could expand on group participation due to oral reports for an English class or to a statistical study for Math class. They could also further study the history of a particular career for Social Studies class. Understanding gender equity is an extremely important concept for today's world. |
