"Where Am I Going?"

Learning Context:
Students will: 1. Assess their own interests and abilities. 2. Explore career options using CareerZone. 3. Need to know how to use the Internet. 4. Present a career choice to the class. LEARNING STANDARDS: ELA #1,4 CDOS #1,2,3

Procedure:
1. Students will complete "Where Do I Fit In?" self-assessment sheet in class. 2. Teacher will distribute and discuss in class "Career Families" sheet. 3. At computer lab, students will use Internet to access CareerZone. Students will complete "Assess Yourself" option and choose three interest areas. 4. Students will continue program following prompts to view jobs that match chosen interest areas. 5. Students will complete "Career Information Sheet" for a minimum of three careers. 6. Students will focus on one career they would be most interested in and create a visual presentation. The presentation will focus on how the career matches students interests or abilities and on other favorable aspects of the career.

Instructional/Environmental Modifications:
Students must have access to the computer lab.

Materials and Supplies:
1. "Where Do I Fit In?" worksheet 2. "Career Families" worksheet 3. "Career Information" worksheet 4. Access to computers and software if necessary 5. Presentation supplies 6. Presentation rubric

Time Required:
PLANNING 1. 90 minutes to familiarize and explore CareerZone IMPLEMENTATION 1. One day to overview "Where Do I Fit In?" discussion 2. Three days to explore CareerZone 3. One/two days for presentations

Assessment Tools and Techniques:
The teacher will use observation and class discussion as evidence of student progress. The teacher will also use the attached rubric to assess presentation.

Reflections:
This lesson will provide students with the opportunity to begin self-reflection of their interests and abilities. Students will then begin to consider long range career goals and steps necessary to achieve them. This lesson could be used in an Introduction to Occupations class or in a Middle School Career Development Program.
