Let's Tell a Story

Subject: Career Development and Occupational Studies

Learning Context:
Students will receive a hard copy of the "Targeting Your Interest Wheel." An explanation of each wedge/section will be given with small exercises as reinforcement. (They will be using the six areas from the wheel and matching various careers.) With the understanding, they will then proceed to select their 3 individual interest areas in order of preference. They are then to View Jobs and complete the following activity: 1. Select one career from the list. 2. Get a printout after their selection of the Job Description through the Source of Jobs for their review. 3. Using the printout, the students will analyze and utilize each element to develop a storyboard with both written and oral presentation. LEARNING STANDARDS: ELA #1,2,3,4 ARTS #1,2 HPE/HE #3 CDOS #1,2,3

Procedure:
Students will analyze the elements to prepare a storyboard which will include the following criteria: 1. Comparison of Present Skills to Needed Skills in relationship to the Job Description. 2. Regarding the Work Activities/Tasks: a. Analyze the relationship of school courses to the selected career. b. Devise a rating scale based on listed abilities using themselves, a teacher, peer and non-related adult. 3. Using the Knowledge, Education/Job Zone and Similar Jobs Section: a. Select one occupation and make a contact in that field and invite them in as a guest speaker. Be prepared to tie-in the occupation with a specific area(s) of knowledge, as well as the levels of education. (Also, an explanation of the specific education level) You must devise a plan of action to develop abilities, skills, knowledge presently. 4. The last panel of the storyboard will include the job Outlook. Charts and graphs may be included. The student will present the storyboard, with an oral presentation, submit a written report, as well as provide a guest speaker in that area.

Instructional/Environmental Modifications:
Students may be limited in regards to outside computer access.

Materials and Supplies:
Teachers will supply students with access to phone, materials for storyboard and any other needed equipment.

Time Required:
The students will be allowed 3 blocks (120 minutes each block) for planning IMPLEMENTATION: Students will present an oral presentation with a storyboard to the class. (Guest speakers will visit at a future date or when available.)

Reflections:
This activity allows students to duplicate any career they may want to explore. This presentation could be used in English class. If the career fits a historical, political or economical profile, it could be used in the Social Studies curriculum.
