Author(s): Renee Trojnar and Joanne Williams
Grades: 9 - 12
Subject: Career Development and Occupational Studies

Learning Context:
Students will have just completed brainstorming career exploration that will lead to the introduction of CareerZone. Students will develop a foundation and exploration of the CareerZone website, first using the Guided Tour. They will develop a list of items available in the CareerZone program to acknowledge their awareness. This is the basis to establish an overview of the program and to set up a Career Portfolio. This portfolio will be compiled on handout/worksheets first and then transferred to the CareerZone portfolio. LEARNING STANDARDS: ELA #1,3 CDOS #1

Procedure:
1. Students view the Guided Tour independently, documenting a list of items available in CareerZone. 2. They will also begin compiling their own career portfolio first on paper and then establishing their own personal account on the website. The teacher will facilitate brainstorming/introduction of CareerZone as well as providing support and guidance throughout the portfolio development process.

Instructional/Environmental Modifications:
Students will first complete on paper a portfolio and at a later session, enter into their own account on CareerZone, according to Computer Lab availability.

Materials and Supplies:
Students will be provided with a computer for the Guided Tour and brief overview. Also, a printout of the career portfolio so they can complete them in class. At a later time, they will be provided with access to the Computer Lab to establish an account with CareerZone to enter their personal data into their portfolio.

Time Required:
This lesson will be completed over the course of two blocks (160 minutes). Block 1: Students will be given approximately 10 minutes to brainstorm, approx. 5 minutes for a Guided Tour, 5 minutes to compile a list based on the tour. Then introduce the portfolio and walk through all of the elements of the portfolio (30 minutes). The students will then make entries into the portfolio for the remainder of the first block, with some teacher intervention (approx. 35 minutes). Block 2: Students will input entries into the CareerZone portfolio and then their own exploration of the CareerZone site.

Assessment Tools and Techniques:
Techniques: Observations and discussion Tools: Checklist on each activity as mentioned above: attached rubric and written materials. Also, the Computer Lab will be utilized with access to the Internet.

Reflections:
Students have an opportunity to explore careers using the website, CareerZone. This will give the foundation needed for further assignments using CareerZone. This gives them foundation skills to utilize various levels of the CareerZone.
