| Learning Context:
1. Students will explore and compare related career groups on the NYS Department of Labor's CareerZone program. 2. Students will evaluate information gathered from CareerZone and write 2 essays relating career information acquired to their own personal skills/abilities. 3. Students will make connections between skills required in the world of work with skills learned and practiced in school. 4. Students need to have access to a computer with Internet capabilities and know how to find an Internet site. LEARNING STANDARDS: ELA #1 CDOS #1,2,3,4 MST #7 |
| Procedure:
1. The teacher/counselor will introduce the project and demonstrate the features of CareerZone. 2. During the project, the teacher/counselor will be available for questions and support. 3. The teacher will advise the Guidance Department of the project so that they can be prepared to help students in the Career Center. 1. Students will work independently on the project. |
| Instructional/Environmental Modifications:
Two class periods will be devoted to the project. Class will be held in the Computer Lab during these two periods. |
| Materials and Supplies:
Students will compile information on worksheets provided. Essays and worksheets are to be turned in for evaluation. |
| Time Required:
Students will be given one school week to complete this project. Two class periods will be devoted to the project and students will be required to finish the project on their own time as homework. The attached rubric will be used to assess work. |

| Reflections:
This project allows students the opportunity to explore career options and relate personal skills and abilities to career decisions. By learning how to use CareerZone, students are acquiring skills that will help them make more informed decisions in regard to their career path. Through information provided by CareerZone, students are able to make connections between academic knowledge and the world of work. Hopefully, this lesson will make students more aware of the relevance of academic coursework. |
