Career Time Line - My Life in the World of Work
Author(s): Cathy Loiacana and Rosemary Maurer
Grades: 7 - 8
Subject: Career Development and Occupational Studies

Learning Context:
Students will create a time line using pictures, dates, and words that will depict 7 possible career changes they might experience in the world of work. They will begin with a job at the lower level of education requirements and work up. They will also create a bar graph showing the changes in salary as career changes are made and time goes by. In order to create this time line, students must explore career options and be knowledgeable about the world of work using CareerZone. This time line will incorporate and demonstrate their knowledge of the workplace. Students will continue to increase social, organizational, and creative skills and increase their understanding of the value of an education. Students will use math skills to create their graph. Students will need to know how to use the Internet, and possibly graphing software. Also, students will need to know how to make a bar graph. Students will need to express themselves clearly and interestingly to their class as an audience. LEARNING STANDARDS: ELA #2 ARTS #1,2 CDOS #1,2,3 MST 2,3,7

Procedure:
1. The teacher will introduce the idea that people today will undergo 7 career changes in their lives. 2. The teacher will ask if students see evidence of this in their lives. The teacher could suggest that it is helpful to be armed with knowledge to be able to direct these career changes in our own lives. 3. The teacher will provide the students with the Internet address to CareerZone and access to the Excel software for graphing, if the student desires it. 4. Students will suggest examples of situations they know of personally of people who have experienced career changes. 5. Students will brainstorm some of the careers they can foresee themselves performing. 6. Students will select a career cluster and choose a career in that area that has the lowest level of education required. From there, the students will use the information in CareerZone to predict the career changes possible for them.

Instructional/Environmental Modifications:
Students with limited financial resources should be provided with the materials needed for the time line.

Materials and Supplies:
1. Students will be provided with Internet access and software as needed. 2. Students will provide poster board and other materials they desire to use.

Time Required:
1. Students will have 1 day of introduction in class with the teacher. 2. They will use 2 class periods to work using CareerZone. Additional time may be necessary during study hall. 3. Students will have 2 weeks to produce the time line outside of class time. 4. Assessment will occur at the end of 2 weeks. Time for presentations will depend on the number of students in the class. Each presentation should take 5 to 10 minutes.

Assessment Tools and Techniques:
See attached rubric.

Reflections:
Students will observe that the lifelong earning potential is directly related to the pursuit of an education and that careers can be stepping stones to other careers. They should also become more aware of learning as a lifetime endeavor, not something that ends at a certain age.
