| Characters and Careers |
| Author(s): Jill Heneka and Richard Burkowicz |
| Grades: 7 - 12 |
| Subject: English Language Arts |
|
|
| Learning Context:
1. Students will choose a character from an approved full-length work. 2. They will identify specific character traits, supporting their choices using specific incidents and evidence from the text. 3. They will also identify interests, likes and dislikes for the chosen character, and will cite specific events in the text as supportive evidence. 4. Once they have created a 3-demensional character, they will visit the CareerZone site where they will click on "Assess Yourself." 5. They will complete the task as the chosen character. 6. Following the completion of the analysis, they will proceed to "View Careers" and they will choose a specific career to the character based on their assessment results. 7. They will then write an explanation of the appropriateness of this choice. 8. Using knowledge gleaned from the search, the students will then create a Character Career Collage which is representational of the character and the chosen career. 9. The final product will be organized into a project format for presentation to the class. All written material must be typed. PowerPoint presentations will be acceptable. LEARNING STANDARDS: ELA #1,2,3,4 CDOS #1,2 MST #2 |
| Procedure:
1. Students will work independently (or in small groups) during class time and outside of class to produce a project for presentation using a novel, CareerZone resources, and visual arts. 2. Teachers will provide appropriate works for choices, instruction on identifying traits and skills, access to the Internet, and materials to be used for presentations. |
| Instructional/Environmental Modifications:
This project may be modified as a collaboration group project. Due to limited Internet access within homes, the bulk of this project should take place during the school day and within the school building. |
| Materials and Supplies:
Students will be provided with appropriate texts, Internet access, and materials for collages. |
| Time Required:
Within a block scheduling format, this project will take approximately 3 class periods for student research and work. At least 1 class period should be provided for presentations. Assessments will be done during 1 class period or block. |
| Assessment Tools and Techniques:
Students will be provided with a rubric to be attached to be used during presentations. |
| Reflections:
This activity encourages students to consider characters as 3-demensional beings as a result of in-depth analysis. Also, there is an authentic connection between specific traits to career choices. This activity could be expanded for use in OcEd or Social Studies class. |
