WHAT ARE MY INTERESTS?
Author(s): Mary Bernard
Grades: 7 - 12
Subject: Career Development and Occupational Studies

Learning Context:
1. Students are using CareerZone to continue to explore careers that correspond to interest areas. 2. This lesson is for the student in conjunction with an interest inventory. 3. Students must be able to use a computer, follow basic computer commands, and must organize and deliver a presentation. LEARNING STANDARDS: ELA #1,3,4 CDOS #1,3B MST #5

Procedure:
1. The teacher will lead a discussion on seven considerations when selecting a career. (Sheet 1) 2. Students will complete "Do You Want A Career or a Job?" (Sheet 2) 3. Teacher will lead discussion about aspects of a career. 4. Students will complete and tally "Identifying your Interest Group": (Sheet 30 finding their two high interest areas. 5. "Identifying your Interest Group" survey will be placed in a Career folder by student. 6. Students will go to CareerZone "Assess Yourself" and use the two high interest areas from the sheets and choose corresponding areas on the interest wheel at the "Assess Yourself" site. (For example, a student choosing #5 CREATOR or the self-assessment would choose ARTISTIC on the wheel at this site.) 7. When the student has chosen 3 interest areas and has been given a list of jobs that match his/her interest, he/she will examine careers that he/she is interested in. 8. Each student will complete and submit to the teacher a minimum of three Career Information Sheets. 9. Each student will present to the class a summary of which career he/she would be most interested in and why.

Instructional/Environmental Modifications:
None beyond access to CareerZone (computer)

Materials and Supplies:
1. The teacher needs copies of sheets for duplication and distribution. 2. The students need sheets to complete and access to the Internet and CareerZone

Time Required:
PLANNING: 2 periods to become familiar with sheets and with CareerZone "Assess Yourself" site. IMPLEMENTATION: This unit should last approximately 1 week (approx. 40 minute classes) including class time for discussions, assessments, and research on CareerZone. Time for presentations would be determined by class size. Each presentation would last approximately 2 minutes, although if class discussion is incorporated/encouraged that time would naturally have to factored in.

Assessment Tools and Techniques:
1. The three sheets each student completes and submits need to be assessed for completeness. 2. The presentations will be assessed using the rubric provided.

Reflections:
I look forward to using this lesson plan with my students in my Introduction to Occupations course, although it can also be used in an English class. I think it would be fun to have the students do this in a "creative mode" as well-having students research a career either for a character in a literary work OR research as though they were that character looking for a job. What career would a major character in LORD OF THE FLIES (Jack, for example) be suited for and why?
