| Learning Context:
Students who have been identified as "at-risk" will utilize CareerZone for self-assessment, investigate 3 careers and identify in writing the role math plays in those careers. Students will: 1. Target their interests by exploring the CareerZone Interest Wheel. 2. Choose and investigate 3 identified careers. 3. Print and organize data and create a career portfolio. 4. Highlight all material relevant to area of mathematics. 5. Complete graphic organizer with material relevant to their interests and career required math skills. 6. Complete "ticket out the door" activity. 7. Interview 1 person from selected career, and complete interview checklist. 8. | Procedure:
Students will: 1. Receive and review time line in which to complete lesson. 2. List 5 jobs they think they would be interested in. 3. Log on Internet: www.nycareerzone.org 4. Click on Assess Yourself button on the top right. 5. Follow directions, select 1 area that you are interested in - click on that. 6. Select second interest area. 7. Select third interest area (students should have 3 letters in the center of the circle). 8. Print this page. 9. Hit view jobs. If there is a video - click on it. Select one job from the first list and investigate. Hit print report to print it. 10. After printing, click on back. 11. Select a job from the first list and print. 12. After printing, select a third choice from the list. 13. Collect all their data. 14. Highlight only information that relates to math skills, abilities, or talents needed in the area of math. 15. Complete a graphic organizer. 16. Contact counselor for help in contacting career person to interview. Counselor will use SABA as a resource. 17. Receive interview checklist and prepare for interview. Any adult may help student in "mock interview." 18. Conduct phone interview. 19. Prepare written summary. 20. Place all materials in career portfolio. 21. Give oral presentation in either Math class, Intro. to Occupations class, Learning Center, or in a small group setting. 22. Answer "ticket out the door" questions: What did you learn from this activity? What role does math play in the selected career? What else would you like to learn about careers? 23. Conference with team to complete rubric. WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: General education teacher, counselor, special education teacher are available to provide support and assistance as needed. Students will: 1. Have access to network (Counseling Office, Computer Lab, Library). 2. Have access to counselor and SABA (School and Business Alliance) for interview assistance. |
| Materials and Supplies:
1. Computer 2. Printer 3. Portfolio binder to include: graphic organizer, "ticket out the door" activity sheet, interview checklist, rubric, time line |
| Time Required:
Students will need 3 weeks to complete this assignment. Implementation of assignment will require completion of portfolio and interview with oral presentation to be given in class or group with appropriate support staff available. |

This activity is aimed to at-risk students to enable them to understand the relevance of mathematics to their future. This activity is appropriate for any high school student in any discipline. This activity answers the age-old question: Why do I need math? When will I ever use it? |
