Career Brochure and Business Card

Learning Context:
1. Students will create a 4-page brochure of an occupation that they would like to explore further and a business card that a person who works in that occupation might carry. 2. Students will use Microsoft Publisher to create the brochure and business card. 3. In order to create these two documents, students must explore career options and be able to transfer knowledge obtained into their own words. 4. Students will use their creativity and knowledge of Microsft Publisher to make their brochure look professional by adding word art, borders, graphics, etc. LEARNING STANDARDS: ELA #1,2 CDOS #1 HPE & HE # 3

Procedure:
1. Students will go to the computer lab as a class and the instructor will model how the career exploration project is to be done. 2. Students will make a template for a 4-page brochure and business card. 3. Students will save template to their own file, as well as floppy disk. 4. The instructor will provide addresses of websites that may be useful to their project (CareerZone and Associated Press Photo Archive). 5. Students will then explore different careers and transfer the information that they have learned to a brochure and business card.

Instructional/Environmental Modifications:
Students work in pairs for the first day with the thought of what they will tutor each other. A projector will be used with a computer so that the instructor can model the basic requirements of the project.

Materials and Supplies:
1. Students need access to a computer with Microsoft Publisher and a printer. 2. Teacher will need a computer projector and computer with Microsoft Publisher.

Time Required:
Students will be given 5 class periods to complete this project: one period to learn what is expected and create a template, one period to explore the addresses given to them on the web and three periods to type information into brochure/business card format and print documents.
