Career Day 2010
Author(s): Maryann Kuta
Grades: 6 - 12
Subject: Career Development and Occupational Studies

Learning Context:
Students will identify what they want out of life and their abilities, skills, and interests. They will connect what they know about themselves to a career that interests them. This career will be researched and presented in a 2-3 minute oral presentation. Students must first complete career planning activities found in "Prepare Today For Tomorrow" published by Rochester Area Career Education Collaborative. Students will explore career choices using CareerZone and other library career reference materials. The students will need to know how to access CareerZone and how to use career reference books. LEARNING STANDARDS: ELA #1 CDOS #1

Procedure:
Students work independently in the library to research careers. Students organize information using an outline on an index card to be used for their oral presentation. The classroom teacher and librarian explains career resources and provides support and information during the project.

Instructional/Environmental Modifications:
Students with special needs will work with classroom teacher and resource teachers. For the oral presentations, the classroom will be set up in a circle of chairs. Students can choose their comfort level by sitting or standing to present.

Materials and Supplies:
1. Project overview 2. Career library outline 3. Career paragraph worksheet 4. Career reference books 5. CareerZone 6. "Prepare Today For Tomorrow" publication.

Time Required:
The students will need 2-3 periods for personal assessment activities. The students will need 3 (40 minute) periods of library research time and 1 day of class time (opt.). Oral presentations should take 2-2 1/2 periods (40 minutes). Resource students will need additional time for research and preparation. Using the attached rubric, students will be assessed during their presentation and after to review student prepared materials including the library research outline, the career paragraph, and the oral presentation note card outline.

Assessment Tools and Techniques:
Students will be assessed on the following: library observation of student research, use of attached rubric, presenter's ability to answer fellow student questions after career presentation.

Reflections:
I think this is a good activity because it follows our Career Day at school, and it gives students the opportunity to reflect on what interests them for a future career. It also gives the students an opportunity to develop self-confidence when speaking as an "authority" on their chosen career. I noticed that after the "formal" 2-3 minute presentation, even the shyest of students did well responding to questions from the other students.
