CareerZone - About Us

What is CareerZone?

CareerZone is a free, career exploration and planning system designed especially for New York State students. The CareerZone website brings together multiple sources of career and labor market information to make career exploration and planning for the future a little easier. The CareerZone system is a product of the New York State Department of Labor.

The CareerZone System harnesses the power of the Internet to provide information on 900 occupations from the new O*NET Database, the latest labor market information from the NYS Department of Labor and interactive career portfolios for middle and high school students that connect to the NYS Education Department Career Plan initiative. Links to college exploration and planning resources help students begin their journey and 300 career videos provide a visual glimpse into the workplace. CareerZone also provides access to up-to-date job postings and basic job preparation tools such as a resume builder, reference list maker and cover letter application.

The latest version of CareerZone was introduced on December 1, 2002 and has several new enhancements and upgrades. Please visit the message board on the main page for information on the new system. If you are interested in organizing a CareerZone training session, please visit the Find a Trainer link for a local contact.

Who Uses CareerZone?

Counselors can utilize CareerZone as a comprehensive career information delivery system. Resources are provided in CareerZone to help counselors stay up-to-date with the latest in career development.

Many colleges, public libraries, community organizations and juvenile detention facilities use CareerZone as a resource in their career development programs. For more ideas on how CareerZone is being used around the State, please see the Success Stories link on the main page.

Who Designed the System?

The CareerZone System was originally designed by the New York State Department of Labor with a grant from the United States Department of Labor. The System was designed with the input and feedback of hundreds of students, counselors, teachers and other professionals across the State. Extensive pilot testing led to the final development of the easy-to-use application that now resides on the Internet. The latest version of the system was updated by a team of professionals at the Department and programmed by the experts at Iradix, LLC in Manhattan.

The CareerZone Team is comprised of professionals from a number of backgrounds. They have expertise in labor market information, career development, training, counseling psychology, school counseling and computer applications. The team consists of a Project Director, Program Manager, Professional Trainer, Assessment Professional and Computer Programmer for CD-ROM applications. The CareerZone Team is supported by a number of professionals from the Department of Labor and works closely with the NYS Education Department.
