| Hofstra University 's Summer Science Research Program |
Hofstra University's Summer Science Research Program offers high school students opportunities in science research under the guidance of professionals in science and mathematics. Now in its eighth year, HUSSRP provides selected research-oriented high school students the opportunity to work with our science faculty during the summer in an on campus research program. The program runs from Monday, July 6th through Friday, August 14th culminating in a science "poster session" in early Fall where students display the work they performed during the summer. The poster session is open to all students in the program and their teachers. Students will be selected for this program on the basis of their high school science experience, a personal interview and, above all, the high school teacher's recommendation. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is April 10, 2009. |

The Rockaway Peninsula barrier beach habitats offer the opportunity for exciting investigations of the physical and natural worlds. This dynamic resource is an excellent place to study the relationship between the environmental factors of this area and how they influence the adaptations evolved by plants and animals. After completing the workshop educators can schedule a teacher-ledprogram where students in grades K-8 can explore the barrier beach at Fort Tilden. Upon completion of the workshop the teacher will be responsible for leading the class and ensuring chaperone participation. |

Students in 6th through 8th grade may only enter the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge (DCYSC). The Nebula competition (9th and 10th grade only) is held in April at an alternate location. |

This opportunity is available to high school students who are participating in a school program that involves participation in one of the regional or national science competitions (LISEFF, Intel, etc.) or other structured school program.
